When Everything Matters, Nothing Wins: My Daily Rule for Clarity in a Noisy Life

Written by David Wilson

June 9, 2025

Some weeks, I feel like a magician juggling flaming swords – except I’m not on stage.

  • I’m a husband.
  • A dad.
  • I run two businesses and a startup.
  • I lead a team.
  • I coach others.
  • And I try to be present in my community.

Sound familiar?

This week, I came across an article comparing the pros and cons of running one focused business vs multiple businesses.

No judgment. Just pros and cons. It felt like a gentle pat on the back, confirmation that the path I’ve chosen has its own rhythm. But it also reminded me of the real challenge:

“How do you manage your focus when your life doesn’t fit into a single box?”

The Battle Between Focus and Diversification

Focus is powerful.

But so is diversification.

I think it’s a myth that you must choose one. In truth, most of us are already living both.

You’re not just an entrepreneur or business executive, you’re also a parent. A partner. A friend. A volunteer. You don’t have one hat, you have five.

And here’s the part no one talks about: You can’t wear all five hats at once.

But you can choose which one deserves your best energy today.

My Daily Framework: The 3 Wins Rule

Let me show you the mental system I’ve built to survive and thrive in this complexity.

I call it my 3 Wins Rule.

Each day, I ask:

🧩 What is ONE meaningful win I can get today in:

  1. Family & Relationships – Can I be fully present for dinner, cuddle with my wife on the couch and watch a show or pack my boy’s lunchbox?
  2. Business – What is one needle-moving task for each priority area (not just urgent noise)?
  3. Health – Did I move today? Recharge?

That’s it.

3 focused wins.

Not 47 tasks. Not inbox zero. Just progress, where it counts.

Planning Like a Portfolio Manager

Here’s how I map the week:

I think of my attention like investment capital. Every week, I “budget” it across 5 key portfolios:

  1. Family Capital
  2. Business Capital (split across Participate, FutureProofSA, and AskDavid)
  3. Community Capital
  4. Health & Energy

Every Sunday night (okay not every, but most), I look ahead and ask:

“Which portfolio needs extra investment this week?”

Then I map it to my calendar, because if it’s not scheduled, it’s not real.

Morning Rituals Matter

The first hour of my day sets the tone. No social. No email. No dopamine hijack. Instead, I ground myself with a moment of clarity, reading something timeless or listening to something wise.

Then I hit the day running.

Ask Yourself:

  1. What roles do I play in this season of my life?
  2. Which one have I been neglecting—and what’s the cost?
  3. What would happen if I gave it just 10% more intentional energy this week?
  4. What does one win per hat look like for me today?

🧩 Final Thought:

You don’t need perfect balance. But you do need clarity. And the courage to show up intentionally, even if only for 15 minutes, in what matters most.

I’m busy creating a little worksheet for this, but I’ll share that later – I need to get to the Padel court for a game with some mates.

Cheers for now.
